10 Steps to a Better Essay

  1. Read your paper aloud
    1. ask someone to read it to you
    2. download a screen reader
    3. listen for confusing sentences or unclear words
  2. Review grammar, spelling, and punctuation, known as lower-order concerns (LOCs)
    1. can use word processing software for help, but do not rely on it
    2. try reading backwards, sentence by sentence
  3. Phone a friend
    1. ask someone you trust for help
    2. ask specific questions which you would like feedback on
  4. Get organized
    1.  look for patterns
    2. create folders (real or digital)
    3. create multiple versions of your essay
  5. Come to the Writing Center
    1. write, read, research, and review all in the same place 
    2. open six days a week on all three campuses
      1. Germantown
      2. Rockville
      3. Takoma Park/Silver Spring
  6. Let it be
    1. go for a walk
    2. watch a movie
    3.  set a reminder to review/proofread your paper again
  7. Look it up (www.m-w.com)
    1. use a dictionary to find definitions
    2. use a thesaurus to find antonyms and synonyms
  8. Go back to your outline
    1. use it as a checklist to make sure you included everything you intended to
  9. Trim it up
    1. remove unnecessary words and empty phrases (deadwood)
    2. add more main points and/or supporting details if you need additional pages/words
  10. Take your time
    1. don't rush
    2. make a calendar
    3. set mini-goals
