Introductions & Conclusions

Remember that most thorough introductions include:

  • A hook that grabs the readers' attention
  • Background information on your topic
  • A narrowed thesis statement (see this page for assistance with your thesis)
  • A blueprint or main points that support your thesis
A typical conclusion includes the following:
  • A summary of the blueprint or main points
  • A restatement of the thesis (DO NOT repeat the thesis word-for-word)
  • A "so-what?" statement that helps the readers transition out of your essay (this is the opposite of the hook)
